Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

Here's what the Democrats should do: insist on adding an extra tie-in plan for adding a $0.50 tax for all gas purchases made from companies that import from the Middle East, and apply the revenues from that tax to alternative energy development.

Won't happen, but that would be a winner, and the right thing to do.

This is why huge omnibus bills should be somehow made impossible. I don't know enough about parliamentary nuts and bolts to know if that's realistic, but I know that huge amounts of ridiculous pork (as well as awful tricks like this) only pass because of the ability to tie unrelated stuff together. If legislators had to vote on each item individually, then they couldn't pass nearly enough stuff in a given year... but maybe that's good. And maybe they'd spend more time voting on particulars than giving hours of bad speeches to the C-SPAN audience of four people who happen to flip to it. I dunno, I'm just typing as I think.
