Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

Blogs I love and/or learn from

« More Miers [UPDATED] | Main | Citation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery »

It's snobbery, Amba. Law schools and the law profession is full of it. Full. I've been reading blogs and commenters too today and it is not a surprise to hear all the talk about how she does not have "elite" credentials. LOL. That's code for Harvard. Or the other one, "she doesn't have a sharp legal mind." More code for she wasn't a federal judge.

In a way it's funny because it's so transparent. It's distasteful because not everyone can attend Harvard.

Wave Maker

Ahhhh, schadenfreude!! I learnt da woid last night during Boston Legal.

I don't see it so much as an elite credentials thing though -- I think it's just red meat conservatives who have been poised for a public showdown since the springtime and they're DAMN FRUSTRATED that they haven't been given it by the President.

These people want a showdown! They want a nominee who is willing to say DAMN RIGHT I'D VOTE TO OVERTURN ROE, and have a black and white paper trail to prove it. They want a power struggle -- they want to set up 2006 as a "prove you're with us" kind of election in which "RINOs" are (they hope) shown the door (and in the process, the Republican majority is very likely threatened, crippled or lost).

If the right wing of the Republican Party insists on pursuing this campaign against Ms. Miers, they may end up being the subject of the schadenfreude.

But why don't they trust George W.? The woman is as loyal as Condi and Karen. I trust that she is a conservative and will overturn Roe, and I'm not sure any nominee will come right out and say it. Why are the right wingers in a knot over this?

Is there something I'm missing?

Nappy40... you didn't mean me, did you? LOL however you mean it.

Just because I'm loyal to Bush doesn't mean I think he can do no wrong, but the dude is human and he's conquered so many personal demons that I can't help but admire that. Plus, the cowboy thing is so cool, to me.

I don't know why the hard right is in such a freaken' twist over Miers, and actually... I don't care. It's gonna happen as it is, so shush and watch is the policy now.

If you do mean me, I am flattered. I am loyal and mistakes are a given in this up-sidedown world, even if you're a President.

Out of curiosity, do you think I bash the Left? Am I an angry person because I like the Anchoress and her rhetoric? or, just conservative? I was called an angry basher this morning, and if I am guilty... maybe I should start carrying a bigger stick or something; for the sake of image? Just asking.

"....on the side that prides itself on standing up for regular folks over against élites."

Actually, that's an accurate description of both sides. :-P

I can't speak for nappy, but I think you tweak more than you bash. I've never seen an angry post from you. And as long as you're willing to get tweaked back in return, that's fine by me.

The Anchoress, on the other hand: she's a basher. Left this, Left that. A good writer, but she's swinging at flies with a baseball bat.

Barry: that occurred to me after I wrote it. I think the difference is the Dems stand up for the economic "little guy" and the Reps for the socially traditional regular guy/gal. They're often the same person, and Thomas Frank of course in WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS expressed Dem frustration that these people have been voting their mores instead of their pocketbooks.

Karen, I didn't mean you. I didn't mean any one person in particular. I don't know you and I'm not aware of any posts from you on the topic. I'm just curious at all the negativity aimed at the president. And by his own party!

No,no Nappy, not the angry part... the part where you said:" The woman is as loyal as Condi and Karen". I wondered if you meant I'm that Karen.

Tom, I wonder if Anchoress is so bashing angry because she sees the MSM being so unfair. She bashes MSM w/her baseball bat. This caters to the Left.

I see it that way. Spud will tell me it's my imagination, but nevernevernever do I see a word about the good things W has accomplished in his presidency. Does this mean there are No good things that have happened in this world since 2000?

Do you ever go to lefty blogs? They complain about the media as much as the righties do. Just like George Bush, I guess the media can't make anyone happy.

Well, I've been to Michael's Mighty Middle, and I have a hard time discerning smirk from anything, I guess. i think he's pretty left.

No, in all honesty, I've glanced at a few. i have a hard time w/the bashing both sides give out. We are wingnuts and they are Moonbats (whatever is meant by that... alien?

I suppose that gives me a tilted stance, myownself. I used to never disagree w/others, never saw the importance of sticking up for convictions. Maybe maturity and raising kids in this day and age has given me insight.

Why would the Left complain of the media? Nothing Bush does is ever gonna be any good and that's what I hear the media saying in so many words. Although they are begrudgingly optimistic over a 35,000 job loss this 1/4 as opposed to the forecasted 100-150,000 loss because of Katrina. And, Jeffords is researching the failures of the response of Katrina... oh, joy. Jeffords.

Karen, I know you admire George W. Bush immensely and there is nothing wrong with that. But your loyalty and admiration is making you blind about the so called MSM. It's a myth. I remember full well the bashing Clinton took from the right, in fact he was impeached. You must be very new to politics not to know how every President in history has been bashed by the other side. It's the way it has always been. You react as if George Bush is the only president in our history to be criticized which you equate with hate.

My criticism of your politics is, if President Bush was to announce that he wants go get rid of every family farmer in America you would still support him even though you are a family farmer. That's blind loyalty. But of course, the real bottom line for you here is the abortion issue. I do not believe you actually support every single conservative cause of the hard right that you have aligned yourself with.

Spudly... of course the Right bashes as much as the Left. Maybe even moreso, but we'll never see that kind of balance because it isn't reported fairly by the press. The media. Whoever it is reporting the news should be doing their coverage w/out obvious undertones (or overtones?)of their political affiliations. That's all.

You must think I'm just a weakling if you think I worship W so much I'd sell my soul for him. You'd be wrong. Admiration for an uphill battle on every issue he talks of doesn't mean I agree w/ everything he stands for. I am new to politics, but can seperate myself pretty good from most of it.

For some reason the abortion issue isn't one of them. It's under my skin.

Karen said,"The media. Whoever it is reporting the news should be doing their coverage w/out obvious undertones (or overtones?)of their political affiliations. That's all."

Which media are you talking about, Rush Limbaugh? You don't see my point do you???

Karen also said,"For some reason the abortion issue isn't one of them. It's under my skin."

I know that. The problem is, you equate anti-abortion with conservatives and republicans and pro abortion with democrats and liberals. That is just plain bullshit to me.
