Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

Yeah, I too have had the same emails and mailings.

I immediately knew something was wrong however. The poem I submitted to their site could never have been that good.

I have a fairly good command of English for a Dutchman who never went to college, but poetry good enough to be published in such an expensive book? No way.

I gave them permission to publish it, but no way they're getting so much as a penny out of me. I'll only pay for the book if I find it in a Dutch bookstore, with my poem in it.

If you want to see for yourself the poor quality of my poem, just google "Welcome to Enkhuizen", and look for a result that takes you to "The Dutchboy Xperience". It's hardly worth the extra trouble, though.

Ugh. Bitches. I *knew* something was fishy when the poems could only be 24 lines long with only 60 characters per line (I like to write long, sometimes epic, poetry). I've only submitted like 3 poems to and I'll be submitting no more, thank you very much.

well, yes another sheep here. Same story got the first letter, so exited! Then second one came for another book, and another book, and another one, and then off course the many noble house requests... Bought the first book, not first page but on a page with 5 others in a book with a thousand pages... Then a CD, could be cool... Finally I decided 5 years later (now) to buy the who's who. Why not? It came in this week and yes my poem on page 1 and there is no glossary. Get suspicious, how can people find their work easily without a glossary? So check it out and find this site... So glad I never bought others! If anyone wants to know if their poem really is in The Who's Who in poetry please send a message, happy to check for you!

Loes (yes again me)

I got to thinking... Anyone who bought the first book ever notice how after that you are always offered a full page in a new book? Since everyone is on a first page my guess is that no book is the same... (your copy is unique!) There are over 500.000 poets on A book will have about 220 pages. Your poem is on the first page, after that probably all poems of people who did not want to own a copy. They do get published, but perhaps only in one book (still the keep their word, you are published, so you cant sue them) every book will have different poems and everyone will be in only one book. No one else gets to read your poetry, just the one person who happens to buy the book they chose to put your poem in...
Check out ( its a good idea to get rid of mails and get your poems off the website...

I fell into the same ring of fire. I feel so stupid and hurt, that there is a company out there to screw people over. I enjoy writing poetry, and it is a stress reliever, but POETRY.COM almost wrecked that for me.But I will not succomb to their tactics, and sweet flowing letters; leading me to really believe in myself. I just wanted to leave a small legacy for my little grandson to read, and understand his grandma. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH POETRY.COM? From my standpoint they are truly heartless.I really feel for everyone that has been scammed. I think that we should all unite, and do something about this. I also, think that the BBB in your area, should be alerted to the fact of the scam.I think of poetry as a part of my life, so in reality, they stomped on me. THANKS ALOT!!!!!!NOT!!!!My best wishes to you all, and justice will prevail.

Wow...this is absolutely amazing! I submitted a poem in the early part of 2007. Of course mine was selected as all of yours were, and chosen to be published in "Timeless Voices". Ironically enough, I was already skeptical about the format in which Mr.Ely uses in search of hopeless poetic people and initially ordered the book out of curiosity. As fate had it, I met someone who had also been "published" in another book. Hers, like yours was featured on the front page...this alone made me wonder. After a little more research, and finding this same story repeated itself, I contacted and requested that my order of the book "Timeless Voices" be canceled. I began receiving e-mails almost immediately after my first initial entry, and have continued to receive them every since. Now, I've also received bills for the book in which I canceled. I have previously requested to be removed from their e-mail list, and after recieving one today, I called them personally. I spoke with a lady named Joyce, who assured me that I have now been removed from their list and that my account has been canceled. We'll see what happens. Just for the record...their convention this year was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. They even claimed to have a couple of celebrities there to greet us. "How thoughtful" UHG!

Anne is same type of scam business luring naive wanna-be poets with the promise of being published "if" selected.

Sure this is good business. I bet there are many companies like them out there. As someone else said, everybody wants to write and be published these days.

I wouldn't know if send spam or sell email addresses though, because I don't have the same email address any more.

I joined their poetry competition years ago and of course my poem was selected to be published in a exclusive book which I could buy.
I did not buy their book but my poem is published on their website and I want it removed. I don't want my name to be associated with them because I feel embarrassed.
If I google my name the poem will show up, published on their website.

I have written to them several time requesting them to take it down but no response. What about my copyright? I did not exactly sell the poem to them and certainly do not want it to be on the web...

Anyone knows how to get the poem down?

LOL... Yep! It's a scam!

I TOO was featured on the FIRST page of, "The Silent Journey". I have the book!

I was surprised to see that others were also claiming to be featured on the first page of this 2004 Hardbound Anthology.

That is just a ploy used to get people to buy the book.

After doing a search on the net for the title of this book, I saw that there were numerous others claiming to have been published in this book, and yet not a single one was found on my book.

So this leads me to believe that there were perhaps 1000's of published poets for this particular book, but were only published in lots of 200 per book UNDER THE SAME TITLE. There could be 10-20 different copies of this same title in circulation.

I bet they published every single poem that went through with front-page status to anyone showing interest on buying the book by means of an up-front deposit.

But oh yes! It's a BIG money-making SCAM. Don't fall for it!!!
