Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

It seems to me that The Times of London caught the gist of the message: "A new era of responsibility"

America, at its best, is a place where personal responsibility is valued and expected. Encouraging responsibility is not a search for scapegoats, it is a call to conscience. And though it requires sacrifice, it brings a deeper fulfillment. We find the fullness of life not only in options, but in commitments.

Oops. The quote below the link was from Obama's inaugural address today.

Actually, I think he covered that kind of thing with "our collective refusal to make hard decisions". That made me sit up and take notice. It's rare you hear a politician refuse to play facile blame games and call everybody to account.

If Obama can rise only to one-quarter of his rhetoric, he'll be a good president.

It will be very interesting to look back at these posts in four years. Keep blogging.
