Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

Long live the typewriter!

You will love this.

I have a couple old typewriters in the basement, just waiting for something like this.

Fire 'em up!

Well! I hope they properly honor him as their revered ancestor!

Oh, I DO love this. Thanks!

(I'm guilty of having not one, not two, but three typewriters up in the attic, including the one that helped me pay for college and on which I launched my freelance/journalism careers, back in the day. I can't bring myself to dump 'em, and, in fact, recently considered going back to the typewriter for personal writing. I miss the click and clack, and--more important--I have come to the conclusion that I was a more disciplined writer back then.)

Maybe the typewriter will make a comeback, and there will be a whole school of writing that is done on typewriters, and a whole body of criticism explaining how and why it is different from the glibness of computer-keyboard writing.

I heard this yesterday on NPR. I admit to thinking that some people have a lot of time on their hands, but it did sound cool. They sure sound like they're having one hell of a time.
