Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

Hmm, I wonder how broad-based the demands for withdrawal are. The politicians quoted as favoring US withdrawal were all Shiite. How do the Kurds and Sunnis feel? Also, are some of these politicians wanting the US out because they feel they can handle things well, or do they want the US out because out presence is keeping them from excercising a freer hand in busines as usual?

Note that the article doesn't seem to mention popular opinion in Iraq. That might be a different thing altogether.

Finally Iwould like to point out that I will have a better opinion of the Iraqi government when we see a peaceful transfer of power take place from one party/faction/coalition to another. My preference would be to see one of those take place while we still have a significant presence in the country.

Of course, Iran is pushing them to push us out. So maybe the title should read "Isn't It Ir[an]aq."

Speaking of Iraqis that want the US forces to go home....

Also, I think Iran is going to find they have less influence in Iraq than they would like, whether the US remains or not. Iraqi Shia looked for aid and succor from Iran when they were under Saddam's boot-heel, but now that they hold the reigns themselves I am sure they will assert their own self-interests. (This has already been observed to some extent.) Iran and Iraq are natural adversaries.

I'll bet you ten dollars that we'll see a SOF with Iraq, that it will allow the US pretty much free motion, and that it will include higher rents for the land than we've proposed so far.
