Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

They Make the "Pregnant Man" Look Tame.

Spotted hyenas -- surely the weirdest animals on earth, socially and sexually.  Read to the end if you can take it.

Man, what a bizarro planet.

Owwww! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!

I understand giving birth through a vagina can be quite painful itself, but giving birth through a penis, pseudo- or otherwise? Ow!

You're right, Annie, we live on a bizarro planet in so many respects.

I understand giving birth through a vagina can be quite painful itself, but giving birth through a penis, pseudo- or otherwise?

Yeah, so much for "intelligent design"!

And then there's the platypus. It's genome was just mapped. Fascinating.

Great article. Now the question is, are those hyena we've all heard about laughing or screaming "Ow! Ow! Ow" while giving birth?

Christopher - what was the news about the platypus? How different is it? Or how similar it is after all?

"...Like monkeys, spotted hyenas can recognize third party relationships based on both social rank and kinship. They can discriminate the ranks of two unrelated group-mates engaged in a fight, almost always aiding the higher-ranking combatant."

Crap. This sounds just like American politics, eh?
