Goodenough Gismo

  • Gismo39
This is the classic children's book, Goodenough Gismo, by Richmond I. Kelsey, published in 1948. Nearly unavailable in libraries and the collector's market, it is posted here with love as an "orphan work" so that it may be seen and appreciated -- and perhaps even republished, as it deserves to be. After you read this book, it won't surprise you to learn that Richmond Irwin Kelsey (1905-1987) was an accomplished artist, or that as Dick Kelsey, he was one of the great Disney art directors, breaking your heart with "Pinocchio," "Dumbo," and "Bambi."

Want to Go Live in Alaska?

The little town of Anderson is giving away free land

It was a high school social studies class's idea to reverse the town's dwindling population and bring in some new businesses and families.  Twenty-six 1.3 acre lots will be awarded to the first applicants, beginning tomorrow at 9 A.M.

Go read Maria if you want to know how it is up there.  LOL!  Let's just say you have to love adventure.

Fortunately for the impulsive, the lots will probably go quickly, many of them to local people who can physically stand in line.

We'd actually given it some thought, but the restrictions (no dog teams) and cost (you must build a certain size home within two years) made us think twice ... as did the location. Not that we are adverse to backwater. Just backwater abutting a military installment. They do have a nice summer bluegrass festival every year. I've been amazed at the coverage this has garnered in the lower 48 ... most of our friends and relatives have e-mailed us about it. It seems American Land-Rush Fever is still alive and well. I hear some folks have been camped out down there all weekend.

[Peter adds: The only thing free about the whole thing is all the publicity Anderson's getting.]

Yes, I think there is something romantic about it purely in the abstract. It awakens the pioneer fantasy in every American.

Incredible!

No way would I want to live in Anderson, even if the land was free. Not pretty, lots of bugs and while there is a military installation right next to it, it's only a radar site, but I still wouldn't want to live next to it.

Oh, and there's little to no work.

The bluegrass festival is nice though! Too bad that only takes care of 2-3 days a year.

How much bluegrass do you need?
