A sorrowful way to spend Memorial Day. Among the things we are being compelled to remember (read the story):

• War can do this to men.
• The fact that it is understandable does not make it permissible or excusable.
• The impulse to cover up causes a wound to fester and stink, not heal.
• Therefore: a free press is a vital organ of a free society, even in wartime.
